New houses in Newtyle

A new 12 unit council housing development in the village of Newtyle was completed last month, as part of the council’s  new build council housing programme.

Rural communities are an essential part of the Angus way of life and these new council houses will go some way to meet the need for affordable homes in these thriving rural areas.

Most of the houses will accommodate families with children including 4 homes for particular needs.  The air-tight, energy efficient homes take full advantage of solar power, helping to minimize fuel costs for tenants. In addition, fibre broadband was installed straight to the premises, to ensure good quality internet, which is essential for home working and studying in the modern home.

The development is next to Newtyle Primary School on a piece of land that formally hosted part of the old school. By converting an unused piece of brownfield land that is situated on one of the main entrance ways to the village, as well as the school, we are ensuring key improvements to the look and feel of the village.

We have tried to ensure that the Newtyle Primary School children have gained, and continue to gain, some real life learning from the construction of these houses. Community benefits are a key part of the contractor selection process and Bancon Construction delivered site safety talks, and organised poster competitions site visits, as well as providing some unused materials to aid their learning.

Our Parks colleagues have also egnaged with the school when it comes to some planting so that the children not only have input into what’s planted but also gain crucial knowledge of biodiversity issues.

Community engagement has been key throughout with regular engagement about the proposed development, with the community ultimately voting on the new name for the street.

The new properties, which are funded by both the Scottish Government and us are managed by Forfar Community Housing Team.

The Newtyle project has been shortlisted in the Housing and Regeneration Category of the Surf Awards. The award winners will be announced closer to Christmas.

Dawn Kane, Business Development Manager at Bancon said:

“Health and safety is our no. 1 priority, not only on site but within our communities.  Safeguarding of the children at Newtyle Primary School is extremely important due to our construction activities taking place next to the school.  The first step in our safety measures was to present a safety talk during an assembly to make the children aware of the works taking place, what they can expect to see and the dangers that will be around them, albeit the other side of the fence! The children will now participate in a competition to design a safety poster to show us what they learned from the presentation. Our industry is experiencing a skills shortage and gender gap and we hope that our work with schools gives some of the children the inspiration to pursue a career in the construction industry.”

The development, which is due to complete early next year is contributing to our target of 120 new supply affordable homes each year. If you would like to see all the current affordable housing developments in Angus, you can visit our Housing Developments webpage.

Work has officially begun on our new housing in Newtyle .The company Bancon Construction has been appointed to build 12 new  homes for affordable rent.

Communities Convener, Cllr Mark Salmond said

This is great news for Newtyle and indeed for Angus. As a council, we pride ourselves in investing in new homes across the whole of our county – in our towns and more rural areas, such as Newtyle. It is vital that we provide families with the opportunity to access high quality affordable accommodation in villages, so they can stay within our smaller communities, ensuring that they are sustained and thrive. Newtyle is well served by a range of local services and is ideally located for people who need or want to work in nearby towns and cities across Tayside. Demand for affordable homes has risen in Newtyle over recent years as pressure on existing housing has increased. We want Angus to be a great place to live, work and visit. Those aspirations are achieved through projects such as this – Creating places that people are proud to call home.

Communities vice-convener, Cllr Tommy Stewart and Provost of Angus, Ronnie Proctor were joined by local elected members as well as members of the community, officers from the Council’s Housing Service and representatives of the contractor Bancon Construction.
